1 Nephi 8: 31 – 33
As Lehi continues looking around he sees people who seek the great and spacious building. On the way there, many get drowned in the river as also many get lost from his view. Lehi, from the tree of life, can see things as they are. He sees that people are lost and/or dying as they try to get worldly things – recognition, power, money, etc. For those who make it to the great and spacious building all they have left to do is mock and scorn others. They try to put others down – that’s how they feel tall. Those of the world climb a ladder to a one person balcony. To stay at the top they must knock others off the ladder. They despair of the loneliness so to get their minds off the problem they knock others down. Those who stay at the tree of life have climbed a ladder to a cultural hall. There’s plenty of room for all to come. They get their joy from calling other people to come and greeting those that are entering and socializing with those who are there. They joy comes from sharing what they have rather than the constant battle to hoard what you can get. Love brings happiness if we love others we help them and share. We give, we love, we are happy. Otherwise we take, we hate, and we are miserably tired from the endless struggle.
