1 Nephi 10:7
Lehi now tells of the ministry of John the baptist. For a moment I wondered exactly how important he was in the plan. Why was it necessary to have a forerunner for the Messiah? Then I remembered that John was the one with authority to whom Christ went to be baptized. Is that important? – Of course! John is an example of people who have authority in all ages. He spoke and acted as one who had authority. He did not doubt himself. He did not argue about who he was or what he was doing. He let his works speak for him. The ultimate testimony of his authority is that Christ came to him for baptism. As a missionary and as a church representative I need not explain my actions or argue my authority with others. I need to let my light shine and leave works that testify tot he truthfulness of the message that I proclaim. That’s why bashing is useless. It is not a work that shows my authority; it exhibits that there is a weakness that I am trying to cover. One who is sure of himself does not need to stop and prove where he is on the map – he merely goes and leaves the landmarks behind him and his arrival at the intended destination as the proof. He still checks the map, but when people question him and he is sure he testifies as he continues on the trail he is following.
