1 Nephi 16: 13 – 23
Lehi’s family traveled 4 days and set up camp again then they went hunting for food before continuing their journey as the ball directed. I expect that they had become accustomed to the lifestyle by the time Nephi’s bow broke and their faith broke with it. Their murmuring was undoubtedly increased or fueled by the fact that they were hungry and by the fact that the problem was an inability to get food. We often condemn Lehi for complaining but if I were in that situation I’d have undoubtedly been complaining at least as loud as Lehi. Nephi was somehow able to maintain his Eternal Perspective. He knew that God held the reins and that their complaints weren’t helping. Nephi “spake much” to his brethren%u2014probably exhorting them to have faith and do what they could do to remedy the siuation. He then set out by making himself a wooden bow. I think this is in line with the principle that we do all we can do. Don’t quit, just move where there’s room. Don’t lose hope, just trust that when you have expended your energy as best you can God will cover what needs to be covered still. However you may fall short He cam make up the difference, but you must walk where you can because He won’t push you. If you can make a bow He’ll show you where to hunt. If you don’t want to do what you can do why should He have birds fall dead in your campsite?
