1 Nephi 16: 24 -39
After the group had humbled themselves Lehi prayed to ask where to find food. The Lord chastised Lehi, but Lehi probably expected that, that’s why he had to be humble to pray. Lehi is instructed to look at the ball. What everybody reads on the Liahona makes the whole group “fear and tremble exceedingly.” Nephi notices that the Liahona operates on faith. As instructed, Nephi goes to the mountaintop and obtains the needed food. When he returned with it everybody was happy and they were again humbled unto prayers of thanksgiving to God. Afterwards they resume their journey and when they next pitch their tents Ishmael dies. This proves to be a test of the faith of the daughters of Ishmael.

The murmurings that ensue cause Laman to suggest that they kill Lehi and Nephi. I see that Laman always has murdurois desired close to his heart. He stirs up Lemuel and the sons of Ishmael with many flattering and deceitful words, but the Lord protects Lehi and Nephi by talking to Laman and his conspirators and chastising them. He waits until they had sufficiently repented before He again provides food for the group.
