Alma 2:1
Amlici seems to be the natural successor to Nehor because of his leadership and persuasion powers. He followed Nehor in teaching a popular priesthood and living on the support of his followers. By the fifth year of the reign of the judges he had gathered enough followers that they began to clamor to make him king over the Nephites. My first thought was to wonder that the people could forget Mosiah’s speech on kings, but I believe that through his cunning Amlici argued that Mosiah said it would be good to have a righteous king and the many followers of Amlici would doubtless have been quite convinced of his righteousness.
