Nehor probably taught the doctrine that priests should be supported financially by the people before Mosiah had even turned over the kingdom. He spent time convincing people that the work of a priest was worthy of pay and then, when they seemed to agree with him he drew them further from the church by carefully inserting doctrine that would be pleasing to men. Soon his followers would not want to listen to true doctrine and were very willing to give more and more to him as he asked them for greater donations.
