3 Nephi 19
This chapter illustrates the mechanics of the communication between heaven and earth through prayer. The people were praying to Christ and he simultaneously prayed to the Father for them. We are told to pray to the Father in the name of Christ – it seems to me that it is like sending a package to someone “care of” another designated person. When the people are in the presence of Christ there is no reason for them to pray in His name because He acts in His name, thus they interact with Him and He interceded with the Father. When He is not present they petition the Father in His name and He receives those prayers and again acts as the intercessor. The other part of the mechanics that we might easily overlook in our regular prayers is that the Holy Ghost helped them know what to say. They were filled with desire and tuned in to the Spirit and He helped them to know what to pray for.
