4 Nephi
the first church built up separate from the church of Christ among the Nephites after the visit of Christ probably copied the performances of the true church with an emphasis on “judge not” as an excuse to administer the sacramental emblems to all regardless of whether they were sinning.

It may be that the practice of entrusting the records to a very young person (Mormon was 10 when he was given charge) may not have been very unusual, that would explain why there were so few record keepers during those years of peace (4 record keepers over 200 years – Amos keeping the record for 84 years). This does not make Mormon any less exemplary considering that he was righteous at such an impressionable age during a time when virtually nobody was righteous.
