The promise was made to Coriantumr because the Lord knew that he would feel the pain of not repenting – Shiz would have been to callous to feel that even if he lived to kill Coriantumr. Part of me thinks that Coriantumr killed Shiz because at that point there were no people to save except himself, and it might as well be him who lived as Shiz.
