Shame is the tool of the devil. It works in the short term but it creates a destructive cycle (abandonment – shame – fear).
- Shame is the feeling that you are bad.
- Guilt is the feeling that you have done something bad.
Examples of shaming:
- Criticism for things a person can’t change (skin color, height)
- Failure to acknowledge the accomplishments of others
- Focusing others on you (narciccism)
- Reacting harshly to minor issues
- Showing that you agree with Satan through your words and deeds (acting as he would)
- Failure to prevent harm when you are able to do so
Steps to heal your own shame (you can only do it for yourself – not for others):
- Recognize shame for what it is – it is a lie
- Practice turning to Christ
- Seek the truth
- Decide to lose yourself in service
- Let the Lord be your strength
- Make God your salvation
- Treat others the way your wish you were treated
Shamers feel shame when they should not and fail to feel guilt when they should
Be careful of therapy groups that share stories and details in a group setting – that can potentially cause more problems than it solves.
