I have always wondered at the use of the word “austere” in Zeniff’s account. It means that the leader of the original group was strict and his men were trained to obey his orders without question. No wonder it required much bloodshed to save Zeniff from the death that was ordered upon him.
Even today it is not hard to find good in other cultures if we have our eyes opened. On the other hand, that there is good in a culture is not enough reason to adopt it for ourselves.
