Alma 32
When Alma talks about the fact that demanding a sign before granting belief is not faith he may well be thinking of the experience with Korihor that had so recently ended.

“As faith is not to have a perfect knowledge, so it is with my words, ye cannot know of their surety at first.”

As faith in something becomes knowledge it opens the door to have faith in something greater and more complete that is based upon the thing with which you have gained knowledge. Thus we learn line upon line. As we do so we draw closer and closer to being able to partake of the fruit of our knowledge – but only if we do not stop exercising faith and gaining precept upon precept.
