I wonder if Lehonti was the leader of the Lamanite army before the split over whether to attack the Nephites. That would explain why the king of the Lamanites felt the need to appoint a new leader. The queen married Amalakia to unite the people by combining the leader of the army with the line of royalty that was acknowledged in the queen.
