When it speaks of the church being broken up, I believe that means that the congregations were broken up according to their classes. The rich met with the rich and looked down upon the poor. The poor met with the poor and envied the rich.
I had never noticed before that high priests were among those who opposed those who testified of Christ – that tells how corrupted some of the church leadership had become – it had become secularized so that the office of high priest was a matter of social standing rather than spiritual progression.
