Doctrine and Covenants + Church History – Lesson 9

Let’s talk about the nature of ordinances as we discuss the sacrament prayers.

I like this list of spiritual armor from D&C 27:15-18:

  • loincloth of truth
    • protects the most sensitive areas
  • breastplate of righteousness
    • protects the most vital organs
  • shoes of preparation for the gospel of peace
    • make it possible to take the gospel out among the world
  • Shield of faith
    • turns to meet the challenges of the present
  • Helmet of salvation
    • protects the ability to make decisions and effectively use all other tools
  • Sword of the Spirit of God
    • this is used to subdue those who would fight you

I love the imagery of the Shield of Faith quenching the fiery darts of the adversary. If we have faith, then when we encounter those fiery darts they will not consume us in fires of disappointed wickedness, but they are extinguished by the cool and clean waters of the faith that sustains us.
