Words of Mormon 1
I think that Mormon wrote the Words of Mormon after abridging the history down to Benjamin but then inserted the small plates before his explanation. If we had both it might have been confusing to re-read the same section of history and then understand why it was included twice. As it is, having the explanation between the two accounts from Nephi to Benjamin would have been confusing after the abridged version was taken.
