I had never realized that Amalikiah arose in direct opposition to the regulation that Helaman made within the church among the Nephites. Perhaps Alma was so widely revered that while he led the church Amalikiah was not inclined to challenge him directly, but took the occasion of Helaman taking over the leadership of the church as an opportunity to stir people up and lead them away. I would have to say however that the strength of his following so early in the ministry of Helaman indicates that he had been working to gain a following for years while Alma was still leading the church.
