A Tel is a mound created by building upon older foundations. The first level we encounter is the most recent, but as we dig deeper we find treasures that were not to be found on the surface.
Scriptures to motivate your study
Joseph Smith Matthew 1:37
Helaman 3:29-30
Doctrine and Covenants 20:77-79
The whole purpose of the Old Testament is is to illustrate and record the story of Abraham and the covenant that the Lord made with him. Abraham is our model in that book. Moses takes 12 chapters to get from Adam to Abraham (he took about 25 chapters to get from Abraham to Moses and 4 books to get through Moses and the Mosaic law). The rest of the Old testament covers only 1600 years.

Doctrine is truth, law, teachings of the gospel.
Doctrine is what, principle is why.
I would say that principles are the themes that string doctrines together into a coherent pattern.
“One scriptural proof is worth ten thousand opinions” Brigham Young
Principles are if . . . then.
In other words, if {I follow this doctrine} then {the result is this blessing}.
I can’t be with my children all the time, but the principles I have taught them can be with them at all times.
