Nephie felt that he could not be a judge because the laws had become corrupt so that he would have to choose between what was legal and what was right. I’ll bet that he did not try picking a righteous successor because he knew that no righteous man could be a judge, uphold the law, and still remain righteous. The mission of angels and the message of the gospel is to preach the conditions for repentance. The first condition of repentance is that we must be built with Christ as our foundation.
I wonder if after a few days in prison Lehi and Nephi thought that their lives would end – if they believed their mission on earth might be over. I’m sure they felt at peace if they did, but I also know that it is very possible that the Lord would comfort their souls and affirm to them that their mission was not complete.
