It sounds like the people in the north were more wicked than the people in Zerahemla, or perhaps it was simply the fact that the Nephites at this time were more wicked than the Lamanites. Some people gathered for a spectacle and other gathered because they were excited about the possibility of someone who would actually speak out against the rampant wickedness. Perhaps there were even some who remembered Nephi and were happy to have him back in Zerahemla.
