I think the five years more sign until the coming of Christ may have been, to some small degree, the Lord’s response to those critics who felt (and possibly even shouted) that prophesying something 400 years in the future was conveniently unprovable within their lifetime. The period of light at his birth and the period of darkness during his brief period of death are about the same length. The darkness during the Savior’s death lasted longer for the Nephites because the darkness started at the end of the darkness of a normal night and ended at the beginning of a normal night of darkness. The difference was that those normal nights would have seemed bright compared to the darkness that would not even allow a candle to burn.
This prophecy of Samuel was not fully recorded at the time, but the record was corrected nearly 40 years later at the Savior’s instruction. I wonder if the saints who were resurrected at the resurrection of Christ told the people to gather to Bountiful to meet their Lord.
