I wonder if our nation will undergo the violent swings from righteousness to wickedness that the Nephites experienced. At the sign of Christs birth the more part of them believed in the signs notwithstanding the lies sent forth by Satan – then they became almost wholly wicked, barely staving off destruction within 15 years. Afterward “there was not a living soul among all the people of the Nephites who did doubt in the least the words of all the holy prophets who had spoken” about 20 years after the sign and yet they will again turn to gross wickedness to the point of near total destruction before the 33rd year. Such swings, when they happen may be the way those who are committed in their hearts to righteousness are winnowed from the halfhearted and the wicked. It may even be that the Lord uses an extreme cycle of stress and calm to winnow the hearts of individuals and help them grow in their commitment to Him.
