Sunday evening (as I recall) we saw a deer with a very lame leg in our yard as we pulled into the driveway. We considered calling Animal Control but it was outside of office hours. This morning Laura noticed that we had a deer laying down in our yard behind the trampoline. We assumed it was the same deer and called Animal Control. They told me to call the Wildlife Division. The wildlife division told me that if the deer was able to move freely without obvious pain they would just let it heal on its own. Because of that we left the deer alone and it has spent the entire day in our yard. At one point in the morning I stuck my head out the kitchen door to look for the deer. At first I could not see it and then I noticed that it was on our deck by our bedroom door – it was trapped. It was scared when it noticed me turn toward it but eventually it calmed down enough to carefully walk towards me until it could get down the steps off the deck – I got a good look at it’s wounded leg as it came near and it left a trail of blood on the deck where it had been. In the afternoon we noticed that there were two adult deer across the fence in our neighbor’s yards keeping watch over this young one. it will be interesting to see how long it stays in our yard before it is healed enough to choose to leave. (I think it is strong enough already that it could leave if we were to scare it by getting too close.) After the kids went to bed Laura and I did some shelf re-arranging.
