Mormon 2
What a great responsibility laid on young shoulders. I am amazed that the Lamanites beat drove Mormon’s army from at least three cities before they were able to withstand the assault – more specifically I am amazed that the people of Nephi did not appoint a new commander after those beginning failures. After all, wicked people (as the Nephites were at this time) are not known for their great patience. Their tendency is to want immediate satisfaction. Perhaps they recognized how much of the fault lay with men who would not stand and fight, or perhaps they chose a young leader so that he could grow in experience and still have many years left to lead them to victory.

What Mormon does not mention specifically is that he was saddened whenever he saw his people rejoice in iniquity, just as he did rejoice as they took sorrow in their iniquity.
