Mormon 5
Why did Mormon change his mind and again lead the Nephites? I suspect it was at least partly because they had been humbled (meaning beaten down) to the point that they could no longer attack their enemies and boast of their strength and swear that they would take revenge. He knew they could not win. He knew that the days of their probation were passed. Perhaps he felt that by leading them he could prevent the drawn out and disorderly demise they were then facing. Perhaps this was his way of showing to the people that he genuinely loved them. Or Perhaps he knew that his stature among the Nephites was so great that the Lamanites would not allow him to sit on the sidelines and escape destruction with the rest of the Nephites – as Moroni was able to do. (Not that Moroni sat on the sidelines, but he escaped destruction possibly because his father had been killed and so the Lamanites figured they could mop up at leisure.)
