I may have misread in my assumption that the water was only 20 feet deep – it may be that the scripture was meant to convey that they rose 20 feet higher than the mountains – not 20 feet absolutely. Noah waited a week after the dove returned with an olive leaf showing that the waters had receded before he sent the next dove which did not return. He still stayed in the ark almost two more months before the Lord told him to disembark.
