Genesis 11
The Bible says that the people used “slime” for mortar. The footnote suggests bitumen as an alternate word – I looked up bitumen to discover that it is the fluid part of what asphalt is made of – that would hold together a massive tower.
“Let us make us a name lest we be scattered.” Even these wicked people knew that without an identity to hold them together the natural man was prone to social breakdown. What they were not willing to do was accept the name that the Lord offers to all people – His name. I think they had been told by prophets that they would be scattered if they did not repent – certainly they were told enough in advance that Jared and His brother prayed to be able to keep their families and friends together.
