2 Nephi 26
Fire always has the ability to do one of two things, it can purify or it can consume. Those things which are precious are purified while those things which are rotten are consumed. Those who have no substantial righteousness are reduced while those who are mainly righteous are left more righteous as their imperfections get burned away. Nephi’s prophecy to his own people is as plain as could be – Mormon must have known long in advance what was going to happen – all he could wonder about was whether he would live to see their final destruction or not. Once the spirit is no longer operating to draw a people to Christ their destruction will come shortly.
