Mosiah 8 – 10
I don’t know if I have noted this before, but the first thing Ammon did was to rehearse the words of king Benjamin – sharing that message was more important than planning their escape. It may well have been because of this spiritual state of the people in Zerahemla that caused Limhi to ask them about the ability to translate.
In the bloodshed that broke out on the first excursion to the land of Nephi – in which Zeniff was spared after desiring to not destroy the Lamanites – was fought between people who both thought they were in the right. I don’t know if the army from Zerahemla would have been capable of destroying the Lamanites – it may be that combined with the people of Zerahemla they may have been strong enough for that before they killed their own army off (perhaps the Lord was sparing the Lamanites). Those seeking to destroy the Lamanites saw them as a scourge and a wicked people who were fighting against God. Those seeking to spare them saw them as people. Neither side was utterly righteous, but Zeniff was more righteous than those who wanted to destroy a people entirely.
This record by Zeniff was modeled after the record kept by the kings among the Nephites – we no longer have the record of the kings from this period of time for the main body of the Nephites.
