Numbers 3
I had not realized that consecrating the tribe of Levi to the service of the Lord was meant as a replacement fo consecrating the firstborn of each family. The purpose was the same but it would be much more organize and less confusing this way.
I did not realize that the prescribed consequence for what Saul did in offering sacrifice without authority was that he should die.
The tribe of Levi was very small. Here they are numbered counting not just males over twenty years but all males over one month and at 22,000 (22,300 if you add the numbers for the three separate groups) they were only two thirds the size of the smallest tribe, Manasseh. Interestingly the number of firstborn males at least one month old throughout Israel was 22,273 – almost exactly the number of Levite males over one month.
