I did not know that not shaving the head was a defining standard practice of those who would be Nazarites and that if they were defiled during the period of their vow they were to shave their head. Sampson should have had his head shaved long before he did but it seems that the Lord gave his extra promise that so long as he did not shave his head, showing visibly that he was defiled, his physical strength would remain.

When a Nazarite vow was completed the hair if the Nazarite was to be shaved publicly at the tabernacle and then burned as a peace offering unto the Lord.
