Deuteronomy 9
Wow! Moses tells the people to not think they were brought into this land because they were righteous in order to disposess the people who lived there before them. It is because of the wickedness of the previous inhabitants that the land was cleared, not because of the righteousness of Israel. Israel got the benefit here because the Lord was being faithful to the covenant He made with their righteous ancestors, not because of their righteousness.
The Lord gave the people of Israel the statutes and commandments that He did not because they were good but in order to make them good.
