John 8
I think that the Savior was stalling and communing with His Father while writing on the ground so that he would know the proper response to this challenge. Of course he knew the text of the Law of Moses but he also knew what was in their hearts, that they were trying to condemn Him and did not care whether they condemned her.
Christ had said that those who testify of the person who sent them were true witnesses or sources of knowledge (no wonder that in addition to testifying of Christ President Eyring also testifies consistently of President Monson) but when he testified that He is the Light of the World the Pharisees said that He must be a false witness because He testified of Himself. This is an evidence that they did hear and remember his words over time but only looked to find fault. Christ reminded that that the testimony of two witnesses was binding and that He was only the second witness of Himself.
I love the way Christ told the people that they could not really be children of Abraham if they tried to kill Him because Abraham followed Him.
By the time of Moses the Israelites had ceased to be the children of Abraham in many ways. By the time of Christ the Pharisees were children of the statutes they had sprouted off the law of Moses like thorns.
