John 18
John seems to indicate here that Christ entered the garden of Gethsemene after offering the intercessory prayer. Is it possible that this prayer was only a precursor to what he was about to do in the garden?
Who was John that the high priest recognized him and allowed him to enter with Jesus and witness the “trial” when he did not recognize Peter and let him enter? It was when John invited Peter in that Peter was first asked if he were a disciple of Christ. The third accusation came from someone who had seen Peter smite the ear from the servant of the high priest in the garden. He must have known Peter was lying but at that point Peter was probably ashamed and afraid of the consequences of his own actions in addition to any fear he had simply for being publicly connected with Christ at this time.
It is an ultimate irony that these leaders of the Jews would not enter the hall of judgement because of the day and hour lest they should be unclean for the Passover. This was a manifestation of how far they had divorced themselves from the truth when they would seek to have the Romans murder a man who never hurt anyone but would not be seen entering the hall of judgement lest they be defiled. Pilate had to come out to them asking what they wanted him to do.
Pilate said that he found “no fault at all” in Christ. Even in his sinful weakness he recognized Christ as the best man he had met.
