This use of the ark of the covenant was not a result of following the Lord and having His power with them but was instead a result of a mistaken belief that they could command God by taking the Ark of His Covenant to the battle. For some it may even have been about viewing the Ark as an idol, as if the Ark was God rather than a reminder of His covenant.
I had not remembered that the daughter-in-law to Eli, Phinehas’ wife, also died that day in childbirth. The only surviving member of Eli’s house was his grandson, Ichabod, who never knew his wicked father or any other member of his family.
