1 Samuel 6
The spiritual advisers of the Philistines said that they should send back golden images of their emrods and mice as a trespass offering and then said that they should let two cows pull a cart with the ark and the offering and if the cows pulled the card to the land of Israel it would be a sign that the God of Israel had done the smiting but if the cows wandered some other way then it would indicate that the plagues had simply been chance. The cows pulled directly to Beth-Shemesh in Israel and stopped. The real offering however was the cows and the cart. The cows were offered as burnt offerings and the cart wood was used to burn them.
Apparently the people of Beth-Shemesh looked in the ark and they were smitten for the offense.
