1 Samuel 12 – 13
The people acknowledge that Samuel has done right for them all his life. He promises that even with their king they will do well only if they follow the Lord with all their hearts. As a sign he announces that he will ask the Lord to send thunder and rain that day. He does and the thunder and rain come. The people ask Samuel to pray for them and he promises that he always will and that even while they have a king, he (Samuel) will continue to teach them what is right so long as he lives.

Within two years of his reign Saul demonstrates his ignorance concerning spiritual authority as he offers sacrifice in place of Samuel. He is told at that time that the Lord has chosen another person to be king rather than Saul. It does not mention David here but it sounds like Samuel has already anointed David.
