I had always thought that Saul first learned about David when he killed Goliath and afterward asked him to play the harp for him. Saul learned about David’s skill with the harp before the Goliath incident and called him to play before any of that although the report from Saul’s servant indicated that David was also skilled in war (perhaps the stories of the bear and the lion were known).
