1 Samuel 17
It sounds like the Goliath experience was the first war experience after the Lord rejected Saul as king. Perhaps that is why he feared – because the Lord was no longer supporting him and Samuel had refused to visit him anymore.
We often think of David as a young boy who was brave or even brash to challenge Goliath. I realized after last chapter that, though young, he was battle proven – he knew what he could do even though he had never fought a giant. Not only that but in contrast to Saul he had been blessed with special assurances by the Spirit of the Lord due to his recent annointing to become the next king. David must have showed great strength just to use the sword of a man who was about four feet taller than him. It is possible that Goliath’s sword was nearly as long as david was tall.
How did Saul wonder who David was after fingering with him, offering his own armor, and having David play the harp for him?
