2 Samuel 4
With the death of Abner Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son, and those who followed him mourned because without him they had virtually no military prowess against David – they did not know that Abner had just defected anyway. Two of Saul’s captains acted the way they would have while Saul was king, by treachery and without regard to righteousness, and decided to curry favor with David by killing Ish-bosheth. David had them killed because Ish-bosheth had done nothing wrong to deserve being murdered in his bed. David would have won the war between them and become king of all Israel without killing Ish-bosheth, thus keeping his promise to Saul that he would not destroy his seed.
