1 Kings 1
David was old enough that he could not maintain his body heat himself so at the advise of his counselors he took a young concubine to keep him warm. Interestingly while he was that old Bathsheba was still alert enough to advise him on the matter of the succession – it sounds like she was markedly younger than David.
It is interesting to note that it is the brother of Absalom who sought to set himself up as David’s successor. Was it their good looks that convinced both of these sons to draw the people after them or was their mother encouraging that kind of high-handedness? This second brother had the aid of Joab, perhaps because he did not seek to overthrow David, simply to succeed him.
Solomon’s first wise act as king was to not make an issue of Adonijah trying to make himself king.
