Christ did not come immediately after the catastrophic destruction. He came after the people had enough time to begin the process of rebuilding. They had advanced at least far enough that some degree of travel was possible and that they probably had not immediate concern for food and shelter although there was almost certainly a lot of long-term work still to be done in rebuilding. The fact that all twelve of the Nephite disciples were present before any word could be sent definitely suggests that Bountiful had been a designated gathering place for the believers before the destruction ever took place or else that it became the natural focalpoint for their gathering after the destruction.
