3 Nephi 27
Just as it was not particularly surprising for Joseph Smith the receive heavenly visitations after he had experienced a few of them during prayer, the Nephite disciples were probably not particularly surprised that Christ came personally to answer their question when they were united in prayer. He had already come to visit them and teach them personally in the past ever since His resurrection.
The disciples were very concerned about the name of the church because their were disputations among the people about that question and one of the first teaching of Christ when he had appeared had been that such things as disputations should be done away.
When Christ says that by the books that are written concerning the works of the people shall the people be judged I had always assumed that referred to heavenly judgement but here he explains that it is by the books written that men shall know of their works indicating that this refers to the judgements that shall be made of this people by men. Heavenly Father keeps His own record by which each shall be judged eternally.
