1 Nephi 3
It is possible that Lehi had some scriptural record with him or among his possessions in his home but the Lord wanted them to have the record on the brass plates because that record would last for generations while a less durable record would wear out.

I notice that Lehi does not dispute that the request to go back to Jerusalem is a hard thing. Neither does Nephi. The difference is that they are willing to do hard things when they know the Lord is behind their efforts. This undertaking is where Laman and Lemuel first began to see Nephi acting as if he had authority among them.

Undoubtedly Laman and Lemuel did not care why they were seeking the records. They only had a glimmer of hope from the words of Nephi because he offered a viable plan of how to obtain them—through a basic purchase.
