1 Nephi 22
Nephi’s brothers seem to be asking an honest question here and I expect they started listening with open hearts. It may well be that they accepted his answer right up until the time he started talking about the Lord raising a gentile nation on their new land that would scatter their seed. At that point they may have concluded that the God Nephi served was fickle and not worth following. They also might have chosen to reject the words when Nephi apparently kept. Ack part of what he knew saying that he could say no more.
