How long was it after the death of Lehi that the murmuring of Laman and Lemuel became serious enough to require Nephi to leave? From the sound of it I would guess that it was only a matter of weeks or possibly months.

I’ll bet that. Epho did not simply take the liahona but that he followed its directions to where they should live when they separated from Laman and Lemuel. I also wonder how far separated they were. It may be that they only went far enough that Nephi would no longer be an irritant to Laman and Lemuel. They may have wanted to stay close enough that others could choose to join them at a later time if they changed their minds or became independent of Laman and Lemuel.
