I have to remind myself that the societies were smaller and more closely knit in this time period which explains why they could so completely turn from good to evil or back in short periods of time. In our less connected and much larger society they are constantly small close-knit groups who are turning one way or another at any given time.
When Alma first went to Ammonihah it was just the next place in his itinerary. He was trying to go everywhere among the Nephites. when the angel told him that they were studying to destroy the liberty of the Nephites he had much more reason to preach there. He hurried not only because the angel told him to return but also because he loved the liberty of the Nephites and wanted to preserve it.
