The covenant made by the Anti-Nephi-Lehies was obviously a righteous covenant but that does not mean that it would have been unrighteous to defend themselves. The only reason Helaman later convinced them to keep their covenant was because they had already made the covenant to never take arms again. They chose this covenant and they suffered the consequences of it and it was counted unto them for righteousness even as it was counted unto their sons for righteousness when they made and kept the covenant to take up arms in defense of their nation.

I just realized why the Amalakites and Amulonites stopped killing—they realized that as they killed they lost the support of those Lamanites who had not already been converted.
