These mass migrations by the people must have spawned separate nations where the people had little or no connection with the Zerahemla-based Nephites. The record of the book of Mormon, while spiritually complete couldn’t be historically comprehensive. While the Nephite nation was destroyed eventually we need not suppose that there are no descendants of Nephi left considering all those far-flung communities and the amount of intermixing that took place between the Nephites and the Lamanites. What was destroyed was any nationality that professed a belief in Christ.
