Helaman 7
As I read about the Gadiantons having utterly taken over the Nephite government I can’t help but compare it to our day. I don’t believe that those participating in or backed by secret combinations have completely taken over but a glance at our justice system and our political environment indicates that they have made significant headway. Re-electing the current administration this year would be an indication that a majority of voters have accepted this approach to governing because this year we have an alternative that is clearly not steeped in such wickedness and I am confident that those who are seeking for righteousness will recognize the difference. In 2008 we had a choice between a newcomer—who successfully appeared like he might be an improvement over the status quo despite some red flags—and an established political figure who was certain to continue the worst aspects of our status quo. It’s no wonder the nation chose the newcomer who has proven to be at least as bad as the status quo on every area of policy and practice. Verse 23 here shows why Obama could win even if McCain would have been better (and we still don’t know that he would have been better)—”I will not show unto the wicked of my strength, to one more than the other.” Neither candidate was an advocate for repentance in 2008. In my view Romney is an advocate for repentance this year while Obama is willing to use religious language to advocate turning from God.
